Falling Out Of Love With Mineral Makeup

My friends, I'm afraid to say, that I've pretty much outgrown mineral makeup.

*GASP*

Mineral Makeup Stash

My stash of mineral foundation, veils and concealers

Remember when I told you I was having problems with my skin? Using the process of elimination, I found out that the root of the problem was the mineral makeup I was using. To be specific, it was the mineral foundation. For some reason, I started having very dry patches on my chin, which then spreaded to my right cheek. It also started itching badly, and it took me a lot of willpower to not scratch my face off. They then turned into pink welts, which resembled acne. This went on for over a month.

Facial Rashes

Taken in August, when the problem started. It got a lot worse.

After I came back from my honeymoon, I didn't change my skincare routine, but started using the BB cream from The Face Shop instead of mineral foundation. I don't think it was the BB cream that helped, but that I've stopped using mineral foundation which cleared my skin up. Come to think about it, it could actually also be the oil-control primer from Silk Naturals that caused the rashes. The problems soon came in after I started using the primer. Hmm. Anyway, I've stopped using that and the foundation, and a month on, my skin's finally smooth once more. Phew.

Digressing a little, not that this has anything to do with my skin, but man, bringing mineral makeup when traveling can be a real pain. Thank God for my ziplock bag, without which I'd have powders all over my makeup in the makeup bag. I really thought it would be easier bringing the small jars along, y'know, for portability sake. Guess I was wrong.

Anyhoos.

I don't think I'd be going back to my mineral foundation, at least not for now. I still love the mineral blushers I have though, and so far, I haven't had any recurring problems when using them. But in general, it's bye bye to mineral foundation, veils, concealers, etc. At least for now.

Mineral Blush Stash

Don't worry, I still love you, my pretties.

As for mineral eye shadows, I haven't developed a strong love for them just yet as I still find them pretty messy to use. I'm waiting for my empty palette and metal pans from Coastal Scents to arrive though, so that I can press them in and test 'em out. Will let you know how that goes when it happens.

Goodbye, oh mineral makeup. You and I have had a good run. It's been fun. But for the sake of my skin and sanity, I'm going to have to let you go.

i remember having the same problem as u before...and couldnt recall when...i gave it a thought and realized it happened when i was on a holiday in australia during winter. it was sooo cold, i might have turn the heater too hot and didnt realized it till it sorta burned my face n my face had what u had all over my entire face. so could it be the hot water that caused ur skin and not the mineral.
by far, i only trusted EDM (everydayminerals) no being bias tho.
secondly, care to make a review on the BB cream FaceShop? i thought of buying it as they have it in Malaysia. but i thought i do more research before investing in them. care to do a review n post pics up?
    thanks

OH NO!!!! I am glad your skin cleared up!!!! I am so sorry that it's your loving SN Primer that "could possibly" be the culprit, I know how it is to love a product and when it doesn't work on you, you felt like a you lost a loved one !

It's very strange. Mineral makeup is supposed to be good, but like you, I've had my fair share of problems. That is why I haven't ordered new items. I'm quite afraid to experiment now. Unless they come with little ingredients.

I think the same thing is happening to me- I have really sensitive skin so I'm now quite afraid to try new products (For foundation I only really have Shiseido Supplist Poreless Foundation and The Body Shop Nature's Minerals Foundation), and recently I've been switching from the mineral foundation to the Shiseido one... and my face actually cleared up and looked better compared to when I was using mineral foundation! (I was afraid of the reverse)

My face secretes more oil and pores look more obvious... and little red welts like acne kept appearing and doesn't go away (Until I switched back to the Shiseido foundation)- a sign of sensitivity :( Sigh. And I loved mineral makeup too. And too bad I'm a bit tanned now so my Shiseido foundation is a bit too light for me.

Oh no! That's sad to know!! Guess you've fallen out of love with mineral makeup huh? Hope your skin will feel and look better soon, now that you're switching off mineral makeup.

Stephanie: Maybe it's because TBS mineral foudation contains a lot lot lot of clay which tend to overdry skin and makes ur skin secrete more oil. I heard kaolin also suffocates the skin if you use too much of it.

I had some skin problems during winter in australia but all was fine and well when i stopped using all oil control stuff, and switched my skincare to fragrance free, paraben free, bismuth free, well, technically all those chemical free. I'm using Sukin and A'kin skincare. Also I stopped using toner because of the alcohol content which aggravates the skin and switched to dipping cotton balls in mineral water (Evian) instead as a toner. Works fine as far as i can say. Lol! Cheaper too. My pimples cleared up.

@Dorph: Maybe that could be a factor. I'm using the same primer and finishing powder (Silk Naturals Oil Control Primer and Make Up For Ever Super Matte Loose Powder) for both foundations- but my skin actually cleared up with the Shiseido foundation compared to TBS. I've tried a few mineral foundation samples as well, all of them gave me the same result (Oiliness, etc.)

I actually have sensitive skin that's very temperamental (Dry/combination oily even, with the occasional breakouts) and using the Dermalogica sensitised skin range + Cellnique Intensive Soothing Factor serum (salon exclusive, got it from my cousin's salon). I don't really dare try foundations much although I want to because of this- my skin will break out like crazy lol.

Although the welts on the skin mentioned like acne as a result from using mineral foundations is not the same as acne. As mentioned, it's a sign of the skin "flaring up" due to sensitivity.

Signature Minerals made my face superrrrrr itchy and put red blothes all over my face too. I hate it.

Aww I'm so sorry to hear about that. SN didn't work for me to begin with *shrugs* I'm now using Buff'd mineral foundation with EDM's concealer. MMU has helped reduce my blackheads so I'm grateful.

I read somewhere that some people could be allergic/sensitive to certain ingredients in mineral makeup - kaolin, mica, bismuth (some foundations have this, others don't) oxychloride...etc.

I hope to gradually wean my skin of chemical laden cosmetics and skincare, but its a difficult process, especially since not many companies produce it (yet).

Sorry to hear about that. Could you tell us which mineral foundation made your skin worse? I have bad experiences with Silk Naturals.

Its happened to me before too. Only Lumiere Cosmetics didn't but I got too lazy to order more and have turned back to my 2way powder foundation which has minimal disruption to the skin.

That's unfortunate for you guys though. SN worked wonderful for me. TBS didn't. Had a makeover at TBS and even after just a lil' over 6 hrs I started to itch around the cheeks where my skin was very very dry.
If most MMU didn't work for you, maybe you could very well be sensitive to mica. I read some people are sensitive to silk as well so that could be another factor if urs is an isolated case of being sensitive to SN MMU.

:( so sorry bout your skin, Tine. I'm glad it's getting better though now that you've found out the cause. I'm just only starting to like mineral foundation and have no problems yet with Everyday Minerals. Good to here that you're still ok with the blush! cuz I wanna try some famous dupes from Silk Naturals. I've read something kinda negative about mineral makeup at http://thedermblog.com (the article is on the "recent posts" sidebar) and never really paid much attention to it until your post. It's not directly related but it comes to show that mineral foundation is not without bad effects to the skin.

I'm alright with Silk Naturals, but not with TBS :(
