Review: The Face Shop Quick and Clean Oil-Free Blemish Balm

I think I've got to be the last person on the whole beauty blogger network thingy to jump on the BB creams bandwagon. Sigh, but can you blame me? I only started hearing of it AFTER I came to Melbourne, and these are either unavailable to me, or ridiculously expensive (what to do, everything is expensive here). So when I went back to Malaysia a couple of months ago, I knew I had to check it out. I bought two tubes of BB creams; the first one was by Skin Food, and the other by The Face Shop. I have yet to open the one by Skin Food, so I'll review the one by The Face Shop first.

For those who do not know what BB creams are (it can't be, right, if I'm the last to know about it? :p), the letters BB stand for Blemish Balm. It's pretty much a moisturiser, foundation and concealer, all in one package. It's one of the most popular beauty product in Asia at the moment. BB creams are particularly good on those with acne-prone skin. Apparently, prolonged used of the product will also help improve the overall texture of the skin and fade acne scars.
Well, I don't know about the last bit of that claim, but this is the way I see it. It's somewhere in between tinted moisturiser and foundation. I find it slightly thicker than tinted moisturiser, but still lighter than foundation, which means it gives better coverage on the skin whilst it evens out your skin tone.
I haven't used other BB creams before, so I can't make any comparisons just yet. But I have to say, damn, the Quick and Clean is good. It contains tea tree oil (you can even smell it!), which targeted my blemishes well. I had some pretty bad red welt-like rashes going on on my chin and right cheek, and it's now gone. This BB cream glides on smoothly on my skin, giving it medium coverage, which I like. It's also oil-free, which is great for my usually-oily T-zone. In fact, this controls oil pretty well. My nose stays oil-free for at least a couple of hours. And that's saying a lot.
Now, the problem with this BB cream is that there is only ONE shade available. Actually, that's pretty much the problem with almost all BB creams; there is a very small selection of shades per cream, if not just one. This, unfortunately, only favours those with fair skin. Ladies with darker skin will find this unsuitable as it would make their skin look ashy. I find this wholly discrimating, I must say. I mean, I'm glad it worked out well for me, but what about the rest of us with darker skin? Hello The Face Shop! Time to make some changes here if you want more customers!

One thing about this BB cream is that it does not contain SPF. Well, okay, no chemical sunscreen ingredients, if you look at the list of ingredients on the tube. This might be good for those who prefer natural sunscreen ingredients though. The Quick and Clear BB cream contains titanium dioxide, and from the position of it in the ingredients list, it looks like there's a significant percentage of it (the higher the ingredient in the list, the more of it is used). Titanium dioxide, amongst other uses, is also a sunscreen ingredient, which protects skin against UVA and UVB radiation.
Oh, and all that claim about malt extract? It's close to the bottom of the list, which means there's very little of it to actually be effective. I mean, whatever it's effective for. I'm afraid I have no idea.
Having said all that, this still beckons big love from me. It's not too heavy, which means I could use it in hot and humid countries like Malaysia without feeling as though my face was going to melt. I still use a light moisturiser and sunscreen prior to this though. It's just part of my skincare routine that I can't break out of regardless. In spite of that, it still doesn't feel like I've had much products on the skin, which is good.
The Face Shop's Quick and Clean Oil-Free Blemish Balm is available in The Face Shop boutiques at RM55.90. I'm not sure if this is sold in The Face Shop Australia though. Australian readers, if you do see this, do let me know and how much it costs here, yeah?
Would I repurchase this? Oh yes. It works for me! :)

The shade from The Face Shop's BB cream is a tad cool against my skin, giving it a very slight bluish-ashy tint on the back of my hand. However, when I evened it out on the skin, it matched back with the original skin tone.
You can't really tell much difference in the before and after picture shown above, but there is some coverage on the freckles I have on my cheeks. No concealer was used on the blemishes and discolouration to show you the difference.

This review is a request from a reader, Jessie of Beauty Loves, who wants to view actual swatches of Benefit's Dandelion and Georgia. I'm not the first person to review the very popular face powders, but I hope it helps. Here it goes.
Benefit Georgia

I got the Georgia as a gift from my aunt in the US (well, I asked her to get it for me, in which I would reimburse her for, but she just asked me to keep it as a gift. Sweet!). Just like the Dandelion, I thought the packaging was really cute, and the description of the peach powder won me over.
The reason I wanted the Georgia was that I thought it was a peach blush, and I wanted one. Since Benefit wasn't available in Penang, and I wasn't in KL at that time to test the colour, I took a blind shot and asked my aunt to get it for me. My bad for not checking it out first, because in actual fact, it's not a blush, but a face powder *smacks forehead*.
No matter how much of the Georgia I applied on my cheeks, the colour would not show. In the end, I just used it as a face powder. It does smell peachy (pun intended) ;)
I swiped a bit more of the powder just to show you what it looks. I didn't show it on my face as you probably wouldn't tell the difference with or without Georgia on.
I think this would work well on those with very fair skin, to give you that glow when highlighting the cheeks. For me, not so much.
Benefit Dandelion

Ahhh ... the very popular Dandelion. Y'know, I've wanted this blush ever since I saw it in a magazine when I was a student in the UK six years ago. As I wasn't much into makeup then, I didn't think I could justify the heavy purchase. When I started working, I stumbled upon the Dandelion once again, and I did not hesitate buying it.
I have a bit of a lukewarm relationship with this blush. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't. The blush is not very pigmented, thus it doesn't show on my cheeks unless I use a lot of it. That's the part which I do not like; I don't like too much gunk on my face. But when the blush does show, it gives my cheeks a very lovely pink glow. Now that, I like very much.
The photographs below are taken during the day, without flash, with Dandelion on bare skin.
The included brush works well in contouring the cheeks. I like using the Dandelion on my lazy days; little work, good results.
All in all, it's thumbs up for the Dandelion, and, err, middle thumbs (??) for Georgia.

I highly recommend buying Benefit products from the Benefit website as the prices including shipping and handling fees would still be lower than the prices in Malaysia and Australia. I've heard so much of Everyday Minerals when I was in Malaysia. I ordered a sample kit then, but the powders came in ugly green jars without sifters, which caused a huge mess everytime I used it. The thought of the mess I had to encounter everytime I used the mineral foundation really really turned me off. The colours did not suit me either. In the end, I ditched the kit.That was over a year ago.
When I came to Australia, I stumbled upon Everyday Minerals again. This time, the jars looked much better, and thought I'd give it another try, and ordered another sample kit. The postage fees came up to less than USD10, which wasn't expensive. I'm really glad I decided to give it another go, because I finally found the perfect shade of foundation for my skin tone.
My Everyday Minerals haul
There are 5 items that you can choose from in the sample kit - 3 foundation powders, 1 concealer and 1 blusher. I'll be reviewing the foundation for today, and will review the rest soon. I bought a large sifter jar as well to mix my foundation in.
DESCRIPTION
Everyday Minerals foundation comes in 6 different categories for skin tones - warm, golden, cool, beige, buff and olive.
GOLDEN - deep rich yellow color or sheen of gold
COOL - pinkish and soft red undertones
BEIGE - pale brown with tinge of yellow or pink
BUFF - natural yellowish brown undertones
OLIVE - yellowish green undertones
Since I am a Chinese with olive undertones, I picked out two samples of Olive Fair and one of Light Olive from the Olive category. I took a shot on ordering these shades because, let's face it, online shopping for makeup (for makeup only available on the Internet and not retail) doesn't allow you to test the colours before buying.
Olive Fair was a tad too light for my skintone, but when I mixed in the Light Olive, I was absolutely delighted to discover a perfect match. It was a 2:1 mixture of Olive Fair to Light Olive respectively. It was a good thing I threw in the large sifter jar from EDM (USD2) as well, because it was much easier mixing in a larger jar. Plus dispensing the foundation on the large lid made it practically mess-free.
Everyday Minerals foundation also comes in four different formulae to cater to different skin types.
SEMI-MATTE - ideal for normal to combination skin types, giving you a creamy matte finish with a subtle shine while controlling oil
MATTE - For normal to oily skin types, giving you an essentially shineless yet silky smooth matte finish while it controls
INTENSIVE - For all skin types, providing an extra boost of lasting intensive coverage with a silky near-matte finish. This formula controls oil where needed without drying the skin.
ORIGINAL GLO - Ideal for dry to normal skin types, providing you with a dewey glow and youthful appearance.
I chose the Matte formula as I needed something to really control the shine on my T-zone, especially my nose.
TEXTURE
The mineral foundation is pretty fine-milled. It is not as fine-milled as the mineral foundation by Silk Naturals, but I like this more because it controlled the shine better. Without the use of finishing powder or mineral veil, I get less shine on my T-zone with Everyday Minerals compared to Silk Naturals. The coverage is good, and does not feel cakey.
A funny thing about the mineral foundation is that I would not see the effect of the foundation on my face immediately after application. However, after a half hour or so, it seemed to set in nicely, thus giving my skin a lovely, flawless look. Of course, with this little oddity, it was very easy to mistake the amount of foundation used on the skin, and I'd tend to pile on more because I thought it didn't give me enough coverage. That was a boo-boo I made when I first started with this mineral foundation. Talk about an inch thick of foundation :p
I also love the fact that you only need so little powder per application.
Amount used per application
I normally do two applications of foundation; first application - one cheek and chin, and second application - the other cheek and T-zone. This gives me good coverage. A tip - always apply your mineral foundation on the T-zone last, to avoid product built-up and to reduce shine.
I apply the powder using the Everyday Minerals long-handled kabuki brush (USD10) which I purchased with the sample kit. This is probably the best face brush I've ever used. It's very soft (love it against my skin), and picks up the foundation very well.
VERDICT
I really like this mineral foundation, so much so that I've actually ditched my MAC Studio Fix Fluid. I'll still use the latter for strong coverage for the evenings; other than that, I'm sticking to my Everyday Minerals foundation. I would definitely repurchase once my supply of mineral foundation runs out (which could be ages due to all the sample foundation I bought from other brands of mineral makeup!)
Everyday Minerals foundation is available at the Everyday Minerals website. 2.5g would cost you USD5, and the 8g USD12. I think it's a very good buy, as the larger jar would last you donkey years.
What I like about it: Good coverage, little shine (very important!), light and very breathable on the skin, and inexpensive.
What I did not like about it: Not as fine-milled as I'd like it to be.

I don't know about you, but I have not had a good relationship with night creams in a long time. They were often too thick and rich for me, which made my face even oilier in the mornings. Until I discovered Clinique's Moisture Surge Extra Thirsty Skin Relief.
Description:

As night creams are richer than day creams, most night creams caused my skin to break out. I have combination skin, with a very oily T-zone, so I cannot have rich creams on my face. So even though it says that it's for all skin types, I think it works better for those with combination or oily skin.
The Moisture Surge comes in the form of a gel, which is great for combination/oily skin. It has a lovely cooling effect on the skin and keeps my skin matte. This can also be used as a mask; just slather a generous amount of gel onto the skin, leave it on for a few minutes, gently massaging the gel in. Finish off by blotting the excess gel with a tissue.
It worked very well for me, especially in the cold and dry weather. The moisturiser kept my skin properly hydrated despite the fact that it wasn't a rich cream. Too bad I finished the last drop of the moisturiser last night. Time to get a new one!
Clinique's Moisture Surge Extra Thirsty Skin Relief retails at USD34 in the US, which you can get online. As usual, it is bloody overpriced in Australia, selling at AUD60 (available at Myer). I decided to save some money and ordered it on Strawberrynet instead for AUD42.50 (RM125.50). For my Malaysian readers, I'd suggest you to get this at Malaysian airports, as it is not only cheaper, but you also get better deals (especially the limited edition travel versions) with other products of the same range.
What I like about it: Not too rich, yet kept my skin properly hydrated. Does not leave any oily residue, and has a nice cooling effect on the skin.
What I did not like about it: Nothing. I love it!

Review: Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer (Oil-Free)

When I was a bridesmaid to a very dear friend a couple of years ago, the makeup artist who was doing my face recommended that I tried the tinted moisturizer, primer and foundation by Laura Mercier as it was known to be a very good brand. As Laura Mercier was not available in Penang, I was only able to get it in Kuala Lumpur. As a start, I bought the tinted moisturizer at Robinsons in The Gardens Midvalley last November.
Description:
It comes in a 1.7 fl. oz./50ml tube, and there are seven shades to the light foundation.
I bought the Nude, which looks like this.
I've tried tinted moisturizers by Neutrogena and Clinique, and I have to say, this is by far the best I've encountered. In Malaysia, I could skip the moisturizer, and just use this. In Australia, I'd apply moisturizer before this, as the weather is dry. It worked well as a very light foundation as well. There was no need for me to have any foundation on my face at all during the day; it evened out my skintone pretty well. For better coverage, I'd layer more of the tinted moisturizer on my face.
I like the consistency of the moisturizer. It's not too thick, which I like. I love the oil-free texture (needed it for my combination skin). Plus it's got sunscreen of SPF 20, so that is a huge plus for me. Quality stuff, I'd say :p
All in all, I really like this tinted moisturizer by Laura Mercier, and it's something I would definitely buy again.

Review: Loreal Happyderm Skin Exhilarating Cleansing Mousse

I've actually never heard of Loreal's Happyderm range. This range isn't available in Malaysia (well, not yet anyway. I'm not sure if they'll bring it to Malaysia). Oddly enough, I found this in the Loreal Paris Canada website, but not the USA, UK or Japan sites.
There isn't much to the Happyderm range though, compared to the other more popular ones. There were only the cleanser (for normal/combination and dry skin) and the moisturiser. Since I've never tried any of the Happyderm range before, I thought I'd check the cleanser out. I bought the one for normal/combination skin.
To be honest, I don't really have a high opinion on mousse cleansers. I think the amount dispensed is pretty wasteful when you actually don't need all that much cleanser on your face.
On the cleansing side, I like it. Apart from all the promotional bull-hockey about exhilarating the skin and all that (yeah, was I supposed to feel "high" from washing my face?!), my skin did feel real soft after cleansing. The skin didn't feel tight at all. It also removed all my makeup well.
The instructions say that I should do a light press per application. This is what a light press produces:
Good Lord, that's a LOT of cleanser per wash! After rubbing the hands together, there was a lot of lather built up. But I reckon there isn't much cleansing agents in bit of foam, because it just didn't feel soapy. I bought this a couple of weeks ago, and I think there is still more than half of the cleanser left in the bottle. I think.
Nevertheless, it IS pretty fun washing my face now, despite the waste. I feel like I'm having ice-cream! :p

Review: Loreal Bare Naturale Powdered Mineral Foundation

I've never used mineral makeup before, and as Priceline is just a few doors away from my flat, I was pretty excited to try this one out.
Even though it contains mineral makeup ingredients, but from the ingredients, you can see that this is not a pure mineral makeup.
I have rather mixed feelings about this one. It's not bad, but not all that good either. Anyways, here's my take on the mineral foundation:
PACKAGING
Contrary to a lot of comments about how bulky the foundation is, I'm actually quite pleased that it has a brush incorporated into the packaging. I think it would be quite swell to bring this around when traveling because it sure beats having to carry an extra kabuki brush and making sure it (the brush) doesn't get smushed in my cosmetic bag. I'm also glad that it's very easy and non-messy to apply (you know how mineral foundations can sometimes be a pain in the bum to apply; your dressing table gets more powder than you do!).
The bristles are pretty coarse though. Still, it didn't bother me that much; I'll just use my own brush when at home, and bring the whole package (hehe!) with me when traveling. I gave the brush a bit of a wash and conditioned it, so it's not that harsh on the skin :p
FOUNDATION
This is the part where I have mixed feelings about. The powder went on really well and makes my skin look flawless (without the cakey, foundation-y look). It stayed on pretty long too (I wore it to a barbeque for a whole afternoon, and it didn't run). The minerals also provide a sunscreen with a SPF of 19. Any product with sunscreen is good in my books.
I would be absolutely delighted with this product if not for the fact that after an hour or so, I looked very SHINY. I had to use quite a lot of facial blotters when I used the mineral foundation just to eliminate the shine when I was outdoors.
A reader alerted me on one of the ingredients used in Loreal's mineral foundation, bismuth oxychloride, which is known to produce shine, and also clog pores. So far, I have no problems with clogged pores with this mineral foundation (but then again, I don't use it every day) but I just can't stand the shine. I have an oily T-zone, and by the end of the day, the "T" just blinds me if I don't blot. Okay, I'm exaggerating there, but you know what I mean.
You can read more about bismuth oxychloride here. Bear in mind that the very-popular Bare Escentuals mineral foundation also contains bismuth oxychloride.
As the foundation contains bismuth oxychloride, I'm reluctant to use this on a daily basis, but I wouldn't mind using it once in a while, or bringing it with me when I'm traveling. I'd just have to remember to bring a lot of oil blotters with me :p

When I finished my Kanebo Freshel White C Cleansing Oil, I originally wanted to repurchase the product. However, I thought I'd give other cleansing oils a go, just to see if they measure up. After some searching, I settled on Za's Deep Cleansing Oil. I've never tried Za's skincare products before, only their makeup, so I thought this could be a good start.

My take on this cleansing oil? MEH. The oil is not as thick as the Kanebo's Freshel White C, thus it needed a few more pumps of the oil to thoroughly clean the face. Thought it was a bit of waste to use so much oil to clean off my makeup.
Speaking of which, Za's Deep Cleansing Oil claims to remove stubborn makeup, even waterproof mascara. Well, I tried removing my waterproof mascara after a wedding dinner - no such luck, mister! I even tried gently dabbing the eyelashes, and pressing them between my thumb and forefinger with the oil for a minute first to remove the mascara, and very little came out. I had to do it many times before they were finally removed. You can imagine several hairs came out as well :(
Would I repurchase this? Nope. It's not very expensive; it's certainly cheaper than Kanebo's Freshel White C cleansing oil, but to have to use so much oil for one wash doesn't sound so cost-effective in the long run. Once this is finished, I'm going back to me Kanebo, that's for sure.

Again, my apologies for the lack of posts for the past week or so, as I've been caught up with wedding preparations and all. But now I'm back with more reviews, and to continue with my review on the Clinelle range, would be Clinelle's Moisture Glow moisturiser.
Description:
I bought Clinelle's travel set, and thought to try the moisturiser (by the way, travel sets are a great way to try out new skincare products, as they cost about a fraction of the original price, and if you don't like it, well, at least you don't have a lot more to go before getting another one).
I found it to be pretty lightweight and non-greasy, which, again was a plus in my book. It did not clog my pores, and my skin felt breathable. I also like that it's fragrance-free.
Still, being a lightweight moisturiser, I felt that even though I have combination skin, the moisturiser just wasn't rich enough for me. After a few days of using it, the skin around my mouth got really dry, and it started to peel. I had to pile on a lot more of the moisturiser than usual at night around those areas. Other than that, I'd say it's quite a good buy for a moisturiser.
Would I buy this again? Hmm ... I might. I'm not about to replace my holy grail of moisturisers with this one, that's for sure. I'll use this for traveling though, but only within tropical countries. I just don't think this moisturiser would not last for more than an hour on my face in cold and dry countries.
The Moisture Glow moisturiser retails at RM35.80, and the travel set (which I LOVE) is sold at RM11.90 (oh so cheap for a facial cleanser, toner, moisturiser and eye cream!) at Watsons or Guardian.
What I like about it: It's lightweight, non-greasy, doesn't clog my pores and fragrance-free. Oh, and it's cheap ;)
What I did not like about it: It wasn't rich enough for the dry areas of my face.

Next in my series of Clinelle reviews is a gem I found in facial cleansers. I can't believe I didn't try it out sooner. I'm talking about Clinelle's Deep Cleansing Gel.
When I tried out Clinelle's Caring Milk Cleanser, I thought it was somewhat lacking as I didn't feel it cleansed my skin all that well. Of course, a lot of it had to do with the fact that it was not even right for my skin type in the first place (it was meant more for dry skin, whereas mine's a combination of an oily T-zone and dry cheeks). I've heard of the Deep Cleansing Gel for quite some time now, and thought it was a good time to try it out. And I certainly wasn't disappointed.
Description:
This cleanser worked really well on my skin. The menthol in the gel cools the skin after wash (a plus point for me), and my skin doesn't feel tight nor dry (another plus point; I hate cleansers that make my skin feel as though it's being washed with liquid detergent. Y'know the squeaky clean feeling?).
The gel cleansed my daily makeup off well, when the milk cleanser did not. I like it that it is fragrance-free too. It's mild for daily use, and I'm definitely repurchasing this once my current tube's finished.
Clinelle's Deep Cleansing Gel retails at RM26.80 at Guardian or Watsons (watch out for either drugstore's 15% discount periods :p)

I've heard a lot about Clinelle products, but never did try 'em out. Curiosity got the better of me, and about a month ago, I bought myself a few skincare products from Clinelle to try out, and I have to say, I am impressed.
I'll be doing a series of reviews on Clinelle products in the next few posts, but for today, my review will be on Clinelle's Caring Milk Cleanser.

For a milk cleanser, I think this one does quite a good job. It did not cause any dryness to my skin after use, which was great. It's a mild enough a cleanser which worked all right on my skin.
This milk cleanser would work a lot better for those with dry skin though (it IS for dry/sensitive skin; serves me right for not reading the label before I bought the cleanser). Since I have combination skin, with an oily T-zone, I didn't feel as though it cleansed my skin that well. I had to use quite a lot of the cleanser in a wash.
All in all, this cleansing milk worked average on my skin. It's not something I'd buy again though, mainly because it just was not right for my skin type. I believe it will work its best on those with dry skin.
Clinelle's Caring Milk Cleanser retails at RM26.80 at Watsons or Guardian.
What I like about it: It's mild (great for sensitive skin), soap-free, and not drying to the skin. Oh, and it's cheap for a milk cleanser :p

I'll be doing a series of reviews on Clinelle products in the next few posts, but for today, my review will be on Clinelle's Caring Milk Cleanser.
Description:

For a milk cleanser, I think this one does quite a good job. It did not cause any dryness to my skin after use, which was great. It's a mild enough a cleanser which worked all right on my skin.
This milk cleanser would work a lot better for those with dry skin though (it IS for dry/sensitive skin; serves me right for not reading the label before I bought the cleanser). Since I have combination skin, with an oily T-zone, I didn't feel as though it cleansed my skin that well. I had to use quite a lot of the cleanser in a wash.
All in all, this cleansing milk worked average on my skin. It's not something I'd buy again though, mainly because it just was not right for my skin type. I believe it will work its best on those with dry skin.
Clinelle's Caring Milk Cleanser retails at RM26.80 at Watsons or Guardian.
What I like about it: It's mild (great for sensitive skin), soap-free, and not drying to the skin. Oh, and it's cheap for a milk cleanser :p
What I did not like about it: Didn't work as well as I'd like it, but that's because it just wasn't right for my skin type.

Review: Maybelline AngelFit Flawless Affinity Foundation

When Maybelline Japan launched the AngelFit Flawless Affinity Foundation, I was quite keen to try it out. I reckon it was the pink compact which sparked my interest more than the foundation itself :p (similar to the pink compact by Kanebo T'estimo, but the latter's prettier, and more expensive)
Description:
I bought the "Natural Ochre" shade, which suits my skin. The two-way cake is quite fine upon application, and does not look cakey (very important for me; I hate the cakey look as that would emphasise whatever lines I have). It's quite long-lasting too; I had it on all day at work, and did not fade off.
This two-way foundation also contains SPF22/PA++, which is also another plus point for me. The compact's not too big, which makes it easy to bring around. Plus, I like the pink case :p
The product does warn users that it contains royal jelly, which could cause anaphylactic shock for those who are allergic to royal jelly.
You can apply dry or wet: dry for oily to combination skin for a light and natural coverage, and wet for normal to dry skin for natural and long-lasting coverage. Blend evenly using a sponge with smooth, gentle strokes. I like to apply a very thin layer of foundation on my face first, just to even out the skin tone, before applying the powder on my face (dry method). The overall effect is quite natural.
The foundation comes in six shades.
Maybelline's AngelFit Flawless Affinity Foundation retails at RM39.90 at all participating Maybelline counters.
What I like about it: Does not clog pores, nor gives you the cakey feeling. Contains SPF. Oh, and did I mention I like the pink? :p

Review: Kanebo Inner Balance Moisture Polish Essence 40ml/1.3oz

I purchased Kanebo's Inner Balance Moisture Polish from StrawberryNET during their August sales. Maybe it's just me, but for some reasons, I do not see this sold at Kanebo salons. Anyways, due to the sales, I thought I'd give it a go.
The essence comes in a glass bottle, and contains some kind of shimmery substance in it, which I assume to be the micro-grained polish. When you spread it on your fingers and hand, you'll see a very tiny bits of glitter, but when you apply it on your face, it'll disappear (too small to be seen anyway). With the tiny polish bits, it's meant to brighten and smoothen the skin.
I've been using the essence for over two weeks now, and, to be honest, I didn't notice much difference to my skin. It does not exactly feel smoother; either the essence is taking a much longer time to take effect, or it doesn't work at all. My face does look a little brighter than before though, I'd give it props for that. Whitening effect, maybe?
Still, just for a little brightness to the face and nothing else, I don't think it's really worth the money I paid for. But then again, I still have quite a lot of it to go, so maybe there'll be a more significant improvement to the skin if I give it more time (I could just be overly optimistic though).
If you do intend to get this, I'd recommend using the essence sparingly, as it tends to leave a sticky feeling on the face. Give it a few minutes before applying your moisturiser.
At the time of this review, Kanebo's Inner Balance Moisture Polish 40ml/1.3oz is going at RM252.50, which, in my opinion, is very expensive. I bought mine during the August sales for RM137.50.
I would agree with Paris that it's more worth it to get makeup at StrawberryNET rather than skincare products as the former's cheaper than retail prices (the latter could actually be even more expensive). Especially if you get 'em during their monthly sales, which could get you a pretty decent 50% discount or more.
What I like about it: Other than the pretty shimmery bits of the essence, nothing.
What I did not like about it: The shimmery bits doesn't do anything to my face, hardly any difference after use. Expensive (after-sales price).

According to CareFair.com, Vitamin C products for skin care can provide greater protection against harmful UV rays, increase the production of collagen and decrease the look of fine lines and pigmentation that are the result of aging. I'm not too sure about how true that is; I know that Vitamin E's good for the skin, but Vitamin C? Hmm, I reckon this bears further investigation. But back to the review for now.
There were two things I liked about this facial wash. First of all, I love the tiny beads. They're very small, and not at all hard on the skin. It exfoliated my skin without my face feeling like a washboard. It's gentle enough to be used daily, compared to the stronger scrubs which I leave for the weekends. It doesn't leave my skin dry and tight after wash.
The other thing I like about this cleanser is, and this is a big win for me, the scent. I LOVE the orangey fragrance. It's so refreshing in the mornings and evenings, and I always have a craving for an orange after every shower :p
The cleansing gel is quite thick when you squeeze it out of the tube. It would be best to just squeeze a pea-sized amount out, and lather it on your face. Too much would be a waste.
The Body Shop Vitamin C Cleansing Face Polish retails at RM50 at all Body Shop outlets.
What I like about it: Gentle exfoliator (can be used daily), lovely orangey scent.
What I did not like about it: Nothing really. I'm definitely getting this again once I've run out.

Review: Loreal Dermo Expertise RevitaLift Double Lifting

I received a fair bit of comments when I mentioned I used Loreal's Dermo Expertise RevitaLift Double Lifting. As I'm still, well, not-so-old (can't say young, 'cos face it, I'm no spring chicken), I reckon there's no need for me to use such "bombastic" anti-aging cream now.
Still, it's never too late to start. The reason I bought the Double Lifting cream was 1) I wanted to try it out, given that it's quite hyped for a highstreet anti-aging product, and 2) I found that the bottom skin of my eyes are starting to sag (yeah, horror of horrors. Scared the heck out of me, I'd say). I needed something to "boost it up" and to stop gravity from winning me over so soon.
Anyways, my take on the Double Lifting cream? Disappointing.

The reason I said that this product was rather disappointing was that it didn't do anything for my skin at all. The label states that you'll feel an instant tightening on the skin when the gel is used. I felt nothing. After a few weeks of use, I didn't notice any change in my skin at all. Quite off-putting for what the cream professed to do.
After about a month of use, something went wrong with the pump; it fell apart, and now I can't use it!
I couldn't pump anything out; even after I tried to manually squeeze the cream out of their individual dispensers, it was to no avail. So now, I'm stuck with bottle of anti-aging cream which I can't get out of the bottle. Any ideas?
The RevitaLift Double Lifting retails at RM65.90 at Guardian or Watsons. The price may vary depending on sale seasons. You might be able to score a 15% to 20% discount then.
What I like about it: Quite an innovative way to dispense two different types of product (now if only they'd make the pump last!)

I'm an oddball, I am. I'd spend hundreds of ringgit (and I reckon, soon dollars) on creams and such on my face, but I'm a miser on facial wash. My excuse? As long as it's not some unheard-of brand which isn't soap-free, and does not dry my skin after use, I'm all right. After all, it's something you wash off after 20-30 seconds of application on your face.
Now I don't mean that you should go around getting cheapo brands which does nothing if not more harm to your face. No sirree. What I'm saying is that there are many highstreet, off-the-counter brands of facial wash which also do a good job in not just cleansing your face, but to keep it well moisturised too.
One of my favourite facial cleansers is Olay's Clarity Fresh Cleanser.

One tiny gripe I have about this cleanser is that it doesn't remove all traces of your makeup. Sometimes, after a wash, I still find hard traces of foundation still stuck on my skin. As I double-cleanse everytime I wear makeup, it doesn't bother me all that much.
I've been using this facial cleanser for a couple of years now, and I always bring the 50ml tube with me when I go traveling. This cleanser has also served me well in cool and dry countries, especially in countries with hard water.

When Maybelline introduced their Mousse Foundation range, I wasn't all that interested in it. At that point in time, I wasn't wearing foundation daily, so I never thought to try it out. It was only when they came out with their White Stay version, that I thought I'd give it a go.
Description:
The mousse foundation comes in a rather heavy glass jar, which is different from the foundations I've used.
Being a now-regular liquid foundation user, I found the mousse a refreshing change. It gave my face a nicely matte coverage, and it didn't feel heavy on my skin. The White Stay version apparently contains skin-whitening properties, but I did not see the effect. It could be that I don't use it enough (yeah, you can see that it was hardly touched) for the whitening to actually take place. Oh well, it doesn't bother me that my skin isn't lightened by the mousse. It also contains SPF24PA++, which is a good feature. I like creams and stuff which contain sun protection. It'll help those who do not use sunscreen. For me, I always use sunscreen and foundation separately.
One thing I did not like about the mousse is that the foundation tends to cake around the oily areas of my face, namely the T-zone. It's quite obvious around my nose, especially when sweat builds up when I'm outdoors. It also stains the my glasses with foundation build up, especially on the bridge of my nose. I'd recommend applying a very thin layer around the T-zone, and your usual amount on the cheeks and other areas. The mousse dries up instantly when applied.
This mousse foundation is significantly cheaper than my MAC. To limit the use of my MAC foundation only to work and dinners, I wear the Maybelline mousse foundation when I go out shopping during the weekends. Something for me to experiment with, so to speak. Hence the lack of use.
The White Stay foundation (a.k.a Dream White, in Asian Maybelline websites) is apparently only available in Asian countries (its Dream Matte counterpart's more widely sold). But do correct me if I'm wrong, ya?

Review: Estee Lauder's Lucidity Translucent Loose Powder

This is my all-time favourite loose powder, and by far the best I've used. I'm sure you've heard of it, for it is one of Estee Lauder's bestsellers. Let me introduce you to Estee Lauder's Lucidity Translucent Loose Powder.
This loose powder provides flawless coverage and luminous finish on your skin, after you've applied your foundation. What I like about this powder is that, compared to loose powders by Clinique and Shiseido, it's very fine, and does not make your makeup look cakey.
Description:
The loose powder comes with a small puff which is used to apply the powder. The blue container has a plastic cover with holes in it, to prevent overspill of powder (you wouldn't want too much powder on your skin either; just a light overall sweep will do).
I prefer to very lightly puff my face with powder, and use my face brush to even the application. By sweeping the brush in a downward angle, I "close" the pores, giving my skin a more flawless appearance.
I use Transparent 06; apparently this is a popular choice of colour amongst Malaysians, as they are almost always sold out. I remembered going from one shopping centre to another, to the Estee Lauder counters just to get this particular colour, and more often than not, they were sold out, and I had to wait about 2 to 4 weeks before they restock. I don't know why they take so long to replenish their stock; it's best to get the powder when it's available, and not wait till your supply's dwindled.
Estee Lauder's Lucidity Translucent Loose Powder retails at RM120 at all Estee Lauder counters.
What I like about it: The fine powder gives my skin a flawless look, and I do not feel as though I'm wearing anything on my face
What I did not like about it: Malaysian Estee Lauder counters seem to take ages to get the loose powder replenished.
This loose powder provides flawless coverage and luminous finish on your skin, after you've applied your foundation. What I like about this powder is that, compared to loose powders by Clinique and Shiseido, it's very fine, and does not make your makeup look cakey.

The loose powder comes with a small puff which is used to apply the powder. The blue container has a plastic cover with holes in it, to prevent overspill of powder (you wouldn't want too much powder on your skin either; just a light overall sweep will do).
I prefer to very lightly puff my face with powder, and use my face brush to even the application. By sweeping the brush in a downward angle, I "close" the pores, giving my skin a more flawless appearance.
I use Transparent 06; apparently this is a popular choice of colour amongst Malaysians, as they are almost always sold out. I remembered going from one shopping centre to another, to the Estee Lauder counters just to get this particular colour, and more often than not, they were sold out, and I had to wait about 2 to 4 weeks before they restock. I don't know why they take so long to replenish their stock; it's best to get the powder when it's available, and not wait till your supply's dwindled.

What I like about it: The fine powder gives my skin a flawless look, and I do not feel as though I'm wearing anything on my face
What I did not like about it: Malaysian Estee Lauder counters seem to take ages to get the loose powder replenished.
